A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Liunan District in Liuzhou City, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, early Monday, with tremors felt in Hong Kong.

The quake occurred at 00:21 a.m. Beijing Time (12:21 a.m. HKT) on May 18, 2026, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) and the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO). Its epicentre was located near 24.36°N, 109.26°E, approximately 190 kilometres north-northeast of Nanning and about 550 kilometres west-northwest of Hong Kong. The focal depth was around 10 kilometres.

The Hong Kong Observatory received more than 10 reports from the public of the tremor, which lasted a few seconds. Initial analysis indicated a local intensity of II on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. This level means the shaking was felt by people at rest, particularly on upper floors of buildings or in favourable positions, but caused no damage.

In Guangxi, local authorities reported that the earthquake left three people missing and four others hospitalized. Emergency services, including fire and rescue teams, were deployed to the affected area.

No reports of damage or injuries have been received in Hong Kong. The HKO continues to monitor the situation.
