A Packed Day at the Movies: Cinema Day Draws Record-Breaking Crowd of Over 200,000

More than 200,000 cinema seats were occupied across the city yesterday during “Hong Kong Cinema Day,” setting a new attendance record and surpassing last year’s figure of 195,000, according to the Hong Kong Theatres Association.
To encourage moviegoers to return to theatres, all screenings were offered at a flat rate of HK$30 for the day, regardless of format or venue type, making the big-screen experience more accessible and affordable.
Across 52 cinemas in Hong Kong, a total of 1,694 screenings were held during the one-day event. The association reported an average occupancy rate of 81 percent — up 4.1 percent compared to last year.
Reflecting the strong turnout, the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau announced on social media that the event concluded successfully, with a total of 201,519 attendees recorded by the afternoon.
In its post, the Bureau noted that Secretary Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, Permanent Secretary Vivian Sum Fong-kwang, and Deputy Secretary Raistlin Lau Chun were also among the audience, joining others to experience what they described as “the magic of the big screen.”
While celebrating the achievement, officials encouraged the public to continue supporting local cinemas and enjoy the immersive atmosphere that theatres provide.
Timothy Yuen Yin-man, chairman of the Hong Kong Theatres Association, called the outcome “remarkable,” noting that theatres saw continuous crowds and multiple sold-out screenings beginning at midday.
He credited the diverse selection of films for the enthusiastic response and expressed hope that the event would continue to expand into a major arts occasion, bringing the community together through the power of cinema.
