Greenland Prime Minister: U.S. Stance on Ruling Greenland Remains Unchanged, Aims to Create Division

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen issued a statement on February 2, reiterating that the United States' ongoing pressure on Greenland is "unacceptable" and condemning Washington's "condescending and divisive" approach.
On January 21, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump attended the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
According to reports, Greenland's parliament held an emergency meeting on the same day. In a statement released before the meeting, Nielsen described Greenland's challenging situation over the past 14 months, attributing it to the United States' "long-term and ongoing" rhetoric aimed at acquiring Greenland.
Nielsen stated that despite recent U.S. denials of any possibility of a military takeover of Greenland, Washington's fundamental position has not changed—its goal remains to incorporate Greenland into the United States and govern it. He noted that such statements have come not only from U.S. President Donald Trump (also known as Trump) but also from other key U.S. decision-makers and close American allies, all of whom exhibit a "condescending and divisive" intent toward Greenland and its people.
Nielsen reaffirmed that the Greenlandic autonomous government has declared these attempts "unacceptable" and emphasized that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Nielsen also mentioned that despite the tense situation, dialogue between Greenland and the United States has begun through high-level official channels, and the autonomous government will strive to achieve "concrete results" from these discussions.
