The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today issued an amber outbound travel alert for France in light of the latest protest situation across the country.

A government spokesman said the amber alert indicates signs of threat. Persistent protests in many parts of France have led to clashes and damage. Hong Kong residents planning to visit France or already there are advised to monitor the situation closely, exercise caution, pay attention to personal safety, follow local announcements, and avoid large gatherings. Non-essential travel to areas where protests are taking place should be avoided.

The protests, which have centred on rising living costs and concerns over education resources, escalated into serious unrest over the recent weekend. Reports indicated that demonstrators in cities including Paris, Marseille and Bordeaux set fires, erected roadblocks, entered town halls and looted shops.

The Security Bureau will continue to closely monitor developments in France and will issue updates through the media, its mobile application and the Outbound Travel Alert webpage.

Hong Kong residents outside Hong Kong who need assistance may contact the 24-hour hotline of the Immigration Department’s Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit at (852) 1868. Other channels include the Immigration Department mobile app, the 1868 WhatsApp and WeChat assistance hotlines, the online assistance request form, or local Chinese embassies and consulates.

Residents travelling abroad are encouraged to register their contact details and itinerary through the Registration of Outbound Travel Information service so that practical information can be sent to them in a timely manner if needed.
