Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu hailed the successful conclusion of the eighth Legislative Council (LegCo) General Election today, congratulating all 90 newly elected Members and thanking the 161 candidates and the community for their active participation.

In a statement issued after the results were announced, Mr Lee described the smooth conduct of the election during a difficult period for Hong Kong as carrying “profound significance.” He said the high level of voter engagement demonstrated public support for the Government’s commitment to recovery and reform following the recent tragedy, as well as confidence in electing capable and committed LegCo Members to drive institutional change and showcase the city’s spirit of unity and mutual support.

This was the second LegCo General Election held under the “patriots administering Hong Kong” principle and the improved electoral system. Candidates took part in 39 open election forums, engaging in high-quality, healthy competition based on broad representation, balanced participation, and fair competition.

Mr Lee thanked every elector who cast their vote, emphasising that their enthusiasm at this critical juncture reflected solidarity in the face of adversity. Voters have returned an eighth-term LegCo composed of patriots who love Hong Kong and possess both integrity and ability, ready to work with the Government to build a better home for all.

To facilitate voting, the Government introduced several pioneering measures, including extending polling hours by two hours to 16 hours, establishing Designated Polling Stations and Outreach Polling Stations for various groups, and setting up Near Boundary Polling Stations for electors travelling to and from the Mainland and overseas. The Chief Executive expressed gratitude to the Electoral Affairs Commission and all staff and volunteers for ensuring the election was conducted openly, fairly, honestly, safely, and orderly. The Government will review the experience to further refine future arrangements.

Looking ahead, Mr Lee said the new-term LegCo Members will join hands with the HKSAR Government on post-tragedy support and recovery efforts. Through initiating debates, reviewing and updating legislation, and driving systemic reforms, they will make Hong Kong a safer city where citizens can live with greater peace of mind.

Under the executive-led structure and the principle of “patriots administering Hong Kong,” the executive and legislature will deepen constructive interaction with appropriate checks and balances, continuously developing the economy and improving people’s livelihood. Mr Lee expressed full confidence that the new LegCo Members will actively engage with the community, better reflect public opinion, and work together with the Government to lead Hong Kong’s deepening reforms and create a brighter shared future.
