Hong Kong Pays Tribute to Fallen Firefighter Ho Wai-ho at Vigil Ahead of Full Honours Funeral

A solemn vigil was held yesterday at the Universal Funeral Parlour in Hung Hom for Senior Fireman Ho Wai-ho (posthumous), the 37-year-old firefighter who lost his life battling the devastating No. 5 alarm fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po last month.

In the centre of the mourning hall, a plaque bearing the words “a noble spirit shall never perish” served as a poignant reminder of Ho's sacrifice. The entrance was lined with floral tributes, while walls were adorned with condolence cards expressing profound gratitude for his courage and dedication.

Among the attendees were Chief Executive John Lee, Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan, Secretary for Security Chris Tang, and former chief executives Leung Chun-ying and Donald Tsang, who came to pay their final respects.

Wreaths and floral arrangements arrived from various government departments and institutions, including the Fire Services Department, Labour and Welfare Bureau, Correctional Services Department, Home Affairs Department, and Labour Department. Contributions also came from the Chief Secretary and Legislative Council members, reflecting broad cross-party recognition of Ho's heroism.

Family members, colleagues in uniform, and members of the public gathered throughout the day in a sombre atmosphere to honour Ho, remembered not only as a devoted public servant but also as a cherished partner and friend. Handwritten messages of sorrow and appreciation covered the walls outside the parlour.

The Fire Services Department will conduct a full honours funeral for Ho today (19 Dec), at the same venue. A public mourning area will be available near the parlour from 9:00 am to 9:30 am for community members to pay tribute.

The hearse is scheduled to depart at 10:30 am, with government officials and firefighters forming a ceremonial parade to salute Ho as it leaves. The procession will then proceed to Wang Fuk Court for a brief ceremony at the estate, followed by a stop at Sha Tin Fire Station – where Ho was stationed – for a final tribute led by Fire Services Director Andy Yeung. The cortège will conclude at Gallant Garden in Wo Hop Shek Cemetery for the burial service.

Ho's death occurred during the deadly blaze on 26 November 2025, which claimed over 160 lives in one of Hong Kong's worst fires in decades. His ultimate sacrifice has been widely praised as embodying gallantry and selfless devotion to duty.
