The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has transformed its “1974” Cafe into a temporary art gallery for the “Integrity and Lotus” exhibition, marking its first collaboration with a local artist. The exhibition features works by renowned Hong Kong ink artist LAM Tian Xing, showcasing a series of lotus-themed paintings. Through this initiative, the ICAC aims to promote integrity in an innovative way, pay tribute to local artists, and support the government’s efforts to promote tourism through disciplinary forces, offering a unique experience for both residents and visitors.

A New Platform for Promoting Integrity

Diman Mak Wai-keung, Director of the ICAC’s Community Relations, emphasized that the “1974” Cafe serves as a modern platform for public education and engagement. This collaboration with Lam Tin-hang is the first of its kind, designed to inspire visitors through art while enjoying coffee. The lotus, a symbol of purity and nobility, reflects the values of integrity that the ICAC seeks to promote. Diman added that the exhibition also honors Hong Kong’s artists and fosters the development of the city’s unique cultural identity. Moving forward, the ICAC plans to explore further collaborations with various sectors to creatively spread its anti-corruption message.

Art with Meaning: Lotus and Lion Rock

LAM Tian Xing expressed that the collaboration with the ICAC holds deep significance. “Since its establishment in 1974, the ICAC has been dedicated to fostering a culture of integrity in Hong Kong, which aligns perfectly with the lotus’s symbolism of purity,” he said. His artwork aims to make the ICAC’s mission more relatable and approachable, softening the perception of the agency as a stern institution.

For this exhibition, LAM created a special painting inspired by the cafe’s name, “1974,” alongside 12 lotus-themed artworks. One of the lotus paintings is paired with a new poem by Lo Kwong-ping, a member of the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Culture Commission, displayed on a large screen in the cafe. Additionally, four of LAM’s Lion Rock series paintings, symbolizing Hong Kong’s resilient and determined spirit, are presented digitally with anti-corruption messages, resonating with the ICAC’s mission to uphold justice.
