A two-month trial program will begin on Thursday, May 1st, allowing passengers to travel with their pets on the MTR's Light Rail network on weekends and public holidays.
To participate, passengers need to purchase a HK$99 monthly pass through the MTR mobile app. This pass provides unlimited weekend travel for one pet; however, owners will still need to pay their own regular fares.
According to the scheme, each passenger is limited to one small dog or cat per trip and must exit the light rail train using the last door.
Cheris Lee Yuen-ling, MTR's Chief of Operating and Metro Segment, stated that pets must be transported in completely enclosed pet carriers, ensuring that no part of the animal is visible or protruding.
Furthermore, the carrier's total dimensions must not exceed 170 centimeters, with no single side longer than 130 cm. The carrier must also remain closed for the duration of the journey.
MTR staff will conduct checks of passengers' permits within the station as needed.
