In recent years, the number of cat-owning households in Hong Kong has significantly increased, with more residents choosing cats as pets and companions.

According to the latest survey, nearly 90% of cat owners are childless and live with their cats, highlighting the growing role of cats as companions in urban life. This trend may be linked to the fast-paced urban lifestyle, declining birth rates, and the independence of cats, which suits modern living.

With the professionalization of the pet industry, the cost of cat ownership has been rising annually. Data shows that the average monthly expenditure on cats in Hong Kong has reached approximately HK$2,006, covering food, healthcare, toys, and grooming. Healthcare and high-quality food account for the largest expenses, with some owners even purchasing pet insurance or customized services, reflecting a trend toward premium pet consumption.

The surge in cat ownership has also driven rapid growth in the pet industry, with expanding markets for pet food, healthcare, grooming, and insurance. Many businesses have introduced high-end products, such as organic cat food and smart litter boxes, to meet the demands of "cat slaves.

"The rise of Hong Kong’s "cat slave" community not only reflects changes in social structure but also underscores the growing need for emotional companionship. As the pet economy continues to develop, related industries and services are expected to further improve, offering better experiences for both pets and their owners.
