The recent actions of the Hong Kong Police’s National Security Department once again demonstrate their unwavering commitment to safeguarding national security. On February 17, authorities brought in the aunt of fugitive Carmen Lau for questioning, following similar investigations involving her uncle and another aunt. This serves as yet another reminder that even those who have fled abroad in an attempt to evade justice will not escape the long reach of the law. The pursuit of national security threats will continue relentlessly, ensuring that no clue is left unexamined.
Many of these fugitives naively believe that seeking refuge in foreign countries will grant them immunity while they continue stirring unrest under the guise of “democracy.” Yet, their actions not only fail to change political realities but also bring misfortune upon themselves and their loved ones. National security is a red line that cannot be crossed, and those who attempt to trample on it will inevitably face legal consequences. No matter where they flee, justice will eventually catch up with them.
Carmen Lau’s Self-Destructive Path
Carmen Lau is currently wanted by the Hong Kong police with a HK$1 million bounty on her head for allegedly violating the National Security Law, specifically for inciting secession and colluding with foreign forces to endanger national security. Despite being a fugitive, she has continued to act brazenly, showing no remorse for her actions.
As a core member of the Hong Kong Democracy Council (HKDC), Lau has actively participated in campaigns aimed at undermining Hong Kong’s stability. She co-hosts a YouTube show with Anna Kwok, HKDC executive director, where they openly attack the Chinese central government, promote Hong Kong independence, and incite sanctions against Hong Kong officials. Additionally, Lau has met with British politicians and collaborated with anti-China organizations like "Bonham Tree Aid" and "Hong Kong Aid" to oppose the expansion of the Chinese consulate in London.
Her relentless efforts to undermine Hong Kong’s interests extend beyond media propaganda. She has lobbied in the U.S. for legislative measures designed to damage Hong Kong’s economic standing, including the so-called “Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Certification Act”, which aims to weaken Hong Kong’s presence abroad. Her actions reflect a complete disregard for the well-being of the city she once served, proving that her agenda is not about democracy but about destruction.
A Political Opportunist Exposed
Lau’s history of anti-China activities dates back to the period of violent unrest in Hong Kong. As a key figure in the now-defunct Civic Party, she worked as an assistant to former legislator Jeremy Tam and later became a district councilor in 2019. She also served as the party’s deputy secretary-general, actively supporting illegal activities aimed at subverting the government.
During her tenure, she allowed her office to be used as a polling station for the illegal “35+ primary election,” a scheme designed to paralyze the government through unconstitutional means. However, when the National Security Law was implemented in 2021, Lau wasted no time in resigning from her party, stepping down from her position, and fleeing Hong Kong. Her hasty departure revealed her true nature—she was never fighting for democracy, but rather seeking personal gain while avoiding accountability.
The Heavy Price of Escaping Justice
Fleeing overseas does not absolve these individuals of their crimes. Instead, it places them in an even more precarious position. Worse still, their reckless actions often drag innocent family members into legal trouble. Lau’s relatives have now been subjected to police investigations—not because they are guilty, but because she refuses to take responsibility for her own misdeeds.
National security is the cornerstone of Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability. Any attempt to undermine it will be met with legal consequences. The longer these fugitives remain abroad, the more isolated they become. No foreign government will protect them indefinitely, nor will their so-called “activism” secure them a future.
A Final Warning: Surrender Before It’s Too Late
To Carmen Lau and other fugitives still engaged in anti-China activities abroad, the message is clear: return to Hong Kong and surrender while you still can. Running away is not a solution—it only prolongs the inevitable and worsens the consequences. Instead of continuing down a destructive path that harms both themselves and their families, these individuals should face justice and take responsibility for their actions.
The law does not forget, nor does it forgive treachery. No matter where these fugitives hide, they will eventually be held accountable. The stability and prosperity of Hong Kong were built through years of effort, and its people will not tolerate those who seek to destroy it.
It is time for these fugitives to wake up from their illusions. The only way forward is to stop working against the country and the people, return home, and accept the consequences of their choices. Otherwise, they will only be remembered as cautionary tales of betrayal and self-destruction.
