Trump: 35% tariff on Canadian goods starting August 1

broken image

Trump posted on Truth Social, stating that the United States previously imposed tariffs on Canada to address our nation’s fentanyl drug crisis, which is partly caused by Canada’s failure to prevent large quantities of drugs from flowing into the U.S. However, instead of cooperating with the U.S., Canada retaliated with its own tariffs.

Therefore, effective August 1, 2025, a 35% tariff will be imposed on products imported from Canada, independent of any sectoral tariffs.Any goods transshipped through a third country to evade this higher tariff will also be subject to the same high tariff.

Trump continued, saying that if Canada or its companies choose to build factories or manufacture products within the United States, they will not be subject to any tariffs. The U.S. will also make every effort to ensure that relevant approvals are processed quickly, professionally, and routinely—in other words, within just a few weeks.

Trump also warned that if Canada decides to increase tariffs on the U.S., the U.S. will impose equivalent tariffs on top of the existing 35% tariff.

Furthermore, Trump pointed out that the fentanyl inflow is not the only challenge in U.S.-Canada relations. Canada imposes numerous tariff and non-tariff policies and trade barriers, resulting in an unsustainable trade deficit for the U.S. Canada levies extremely high tariffs on American dairy farmers, up to 400%, and this is under the assumption that U.S. dairy producers can even access the Canadian market. “This trade deficit poses a significant threat to our economy and even jeopardizes national security!”
