Sparking Sharp Exchange with Vatican

US President Donald Trump has launched a fresh public attack on Pope Leo XIV, accusing the pontiff of holding a soft stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

In an interview broadcast on May 6, 2026, with a conservative American radio host, Trump claimed that the Pope “would have no problem” if Iran developed nuclear weapons. He warned that such a position would endanger Catholics and people around the world, describing it as highly irresponsible.

The remarks triggered a swift and firm response from the Vatican. Pope Leo XIV stated that the Catholic Church’s core mission is to spread the Gospel and promote peace. He firmly reiterated the Church’s long-standing opposition to nuclear weapons and urged his critics to “first provide facts” before making accusations.

The Pope added calmly that he only hopes the international community can hear his voice, emphasising that “God’s words carry value.”

The controversy comes at a sensitive time, as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit Italy this week and is expected to meet with the Pope. Rubio downplayed the tensions, saying the visit had been arranged long before the current dispute and was not intended to repair relations between the Trump administration and the Vatican.

Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also criticised Trump’s comments, describing attacks on the Pope as “unacceptable.” He posted on social media that such rhetoric does not contribute to peace and expressed full support for the Pope’s position on dialogue, the sanctity of human life, and freedom.

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said the Pope had already given his clear response and had no further comment, noting that the reply fully reflected the spirit of Christianity.

This latest clash highlights the growing rift between the Trump administration and the Holy See, particularly over issues related to the ongoing Iran situation, nuclear proliferation, and broader international peace efforts.

The exchange has drawn significant international attention, with many observers noting the unusual public tension between a sitting US president and the leader of the Catholic Church.
