A strong earthquake struck the waters near Mindanao Island in the Philippines on the morning of June 8. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) initially reported the magnitude as 8.2 before revising it downward to 7.8. There have been no confirmed casualties from the quake so far. However, videos circulating on social media show multiple buildings collapsing in the Philippines, with residents taking shelter in open areas.

In response to the earthquake, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued tsunami warnings for several areas of Mindanao, urging residents to stay away from coastal zones and move to higher ground. Boat owners are advised to ensure vessels in ports and shallow waters are securely moored and to keep clear of shorelines.

In addition to the Philippines, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has issued tsunami alerts for Indonesia, Palau, Yap Island, Taiwan, and other areas. Japan’s Meteorological Agency has issued tsunami advisories for the Kanto region, Izu and Ogasawara Islands, Tokai region, Wakayama Prefecture, Kochi Prefecture, Miyazaki Prefecture, and eastern Kagoshima Prefecture, calling on the public to immediately move away from the sea and rivers, and issuing evacuation instructions to residents in affected areas.
