World Cup: Chinese Embassies in US, Canada and Mexico Issue Safety Alerts Urging Citizens to Guard Against Risks While Attending Matches Abroad

With the United States, Canada and Mexico World Cup set to kick off soon, the Chinese embassies and consulates in the three countries have respectively issued safety reminders, urging Chinese citizens traveling abroad to watch the matches to ensure safe journeys, engage in civilized spectating, guard against various risks, and protect their personal and property safety.
Beware of Ticket Scams and Apply for Visas Early
The Chinese Embassy in the United States reminded citizens to purchase tickets only through official channels or authorized ticketing partners designated by FIFA. It warned against transferring money to strangers via social media platforms to buy tickets, and to be vigilant against scalped tickets, transferred tickets, internal tickets, suspiciously low-priced offers, and fake FIFA websites designed to deceive buyers.
In addition, Chinese citizens planning to travel to the US must apply for a B1/B2 visa in advance. During the World Cup period, wait times for in-person visa interviews at US embassies and consulates in China may be extended, so applicants are advised to submit their applications as early as possible.
Do Not Bring Prohibited or Offensive Items into Stadiums
The Chinese Embassy in Canada reminded citizens to complete their Canadian visa formalities before departure, ensuring the visa type, validity period, and authorized length of stay are all in order. Citizens should strictly abide by local laws and regulations and respect local customs and practices.
The embassy noted that FIFA has released stadium code of conduct guidelines and urged fans to comply strictly. Prohibited items include matches, bottled liquids exceeding 100ml, food, as well as any flags, banners, clothing or other articles with political, discriminatory or offensive content.
Guard Against Robbery and Kidnapping in Mexico
The Chinese Embassy in Mexico issued a security alert noting that the tournament period coincides with the local hurricane season, and advised citizens to closely monitor weather updates. Travelers should select reputable travel agencies and tourism products with proper qualifications and credibility, sign formal contracts, and strongly consider purchasing appropriate accident and medical insurance.
Furthermore, incidents of robbery and kidnapping occur from time to time in certain areas of Mexico. Citizens are urged to remain highly vigilant, avoid going out alone or visiting non-tourist areas, and refrain from blindly checking in at “viral” internet-famous spots. The embassy also called on travelers to heighten awareness of theft and robbery prevention: maintain a low profile when going out, avoid wearing or carrying expensive jewelry, luxury handbags or other valuables, and dress simply.
