The Cheung Chau Bun Scrambling Finals, a key event of the Taiping Qingjiao, kicked off at midnight on May 6, 2025, at Pak Tai Temple Playground, following Buddha’s Birthday celebrations. Hundreds gathered to watch the thrilling competition.
Men’s Division
KWOK Ka-ming, a nine-time champion, reclaimed the “King of the Bun Tower” title with 1,131 points, marking his tenth win after a five-year gap. His strategy focused on grabbing high-value 9-point buns and safely descending within the three-minute limit. Wong Chi-kit took second with 968 points, and Yau Ka-chun placed third with 950 points. Yip Kin-man won the “Generation Peace Award” for collecting 170 buns.
Women’s Division
Janet Kung defended her “Queen of the Bun Tower” title, earning her third championship and the “Triple Queen” honor. Despite mistaking the 3-point bun zone for the 9-point zone mid-race, she outscored six-time champion Wong Ka-yan, who faced tough competition. Kung called the win a “milestone” after nine years of competing and plans to continue.
The Race
Twelve climbers—nine men and three women—raced up the bun tower, targeting 9-point buns at the top and 3-point buns below. The crowd cheered as all competitors descended safely within the time limit, avoiding disqualifications. The event showcased skill and tradition, leaving spectators in high spirits.
