Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu delivered a speech at the National Day fireworks display held to celebrate the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Speaking at the event, Lee expressed pride in the nation’s achievements over the past 77 years, highlighting China’s rapid economic development and long-term social stability. He said the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is advancing with unprecedented momentum and bright prospects, bringing encouragement and pride to all Chinese people.
Lee noted that the country’s development has created significant opportunities for Hong Kong. The HKSAR Government has formulated Hong Kong’s first Five-Year Plan to align with the national 15th Five-Year Plan, actively integrating into and serving the overall national development strategy so that Hong Kong can progress further and residents can share more of the benefits of growth.
He said the government, together with various sectors of society, has organised a series of celebration activities and special offers covering culture and the arts, leisure, dining, shopping and transport, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
This year’s fireworks display featured eight chapters with more than 30,000 fireworks forming a spectacular “fireworks canopy” over Victoria Harbour. Lee described the show as depicting majestic mountains and flowing rivers that showcase the grandeur of the motherland, while also illuminating the Chinese nation’s spirit of exploration and perseverance in pursuing dreams.
He particularly highlighted the fourth chapter, “Dreams Take Flight,” which portrayed the vastness of the universe and symbolised Hong Kong people’s courage to chase their dreams. Lee cited the example of Dr Lai Ka-ying, who progressed from student to computer science PhD and became Hong Kong’s first national astronaut, demonstrating that persistent effort can turn dreams into reality.
Lee thanked Sun Life Financial, which is approaching its 135th anniversary, for sponsoring the fireworks display. He concluded by wishing the country prosperity and strength, Hong Kong stability and success, and all those present well.
