Hong Kong’s Secretary for Security, Chris Tang Ping-keung, has pledged his unwavering allegiance to Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu as Tang marks his fourth anniversary in his current role.

With the next Chief Executive election fast approaching next year, speculation had been mounting about Tang's political future—especially following his successful oversight of major legislative milestones, including the enactment of Article 23. However, the security chief firmly dismissed any personal ambitions for a higher leadership position, describing his individual aspirations as insignificant and emphasizing his dedication to serving wherever the administration needs him most.

A Modest Approach to Leadership

During a recent television interview, when questioned about whether he harbored intentions to climb the political ladder, Tang responded by offering his lifelong support for John Lee’s continued leadership of the city.

"My personal status is as trivial as dust," Tang remarked, explaining that his sole focus remains on fulfilling his duties for as long as the government requires his services. He added with humility that he would be perfectly content to step aside or pursue other paths should his current role no longer be deemed necessary.

A Track Record of Humility

This low-profile stance on career advancement is nothing new for the security chief. In a past radio interview with host Stephen Chan Chi-wan, Tang was asked a hypothetical question—drawing parallels to a plotline in the political thriller film Cold War—about whether he would prefer to serve as the Commissioner of Police or the Chief Executive.

Rather than taking the bait, Tang gracefully deflected the question with humor, stating he would be entirely satisfied with a minor, entry-level role, such as the staff member responsible for opening the gates at a police station.

Reflecting on National Security Milestones

To mark his four-year tenure as Secretary for Security, Tang shared a retrospective video on his social media platforms today, reflecting on the immense responsibilities and challenges that come with the office.

Tang credited the unwavering backing of the central government and the firm leadership of the Chief Executive for his department's achievements. He noted that his team utilized Beijing's white paper on the "One Country, Two Systems" framework as their ultimate guiding principle. By doing so, Tang concluded, they have successfully established a robust protective barrier to secure the high-quality development of Hong Kong, describing his past four years in office as deeply fulfilling and gratifying.
