Ex-Hong Kong Weather Chief Defies Record Heatwave Without Air Conditioning

With Hong Kong facing a blistering 35°C forecast this Friday, former Observatory Director Lam Chiu-ying continues to eschew air conditioning, relying instead on small USB fans and traditional cooling methods.

Rising Public Discontent Over Severe Heat
The persistent heatwave has sparked intense complaints online, with citizens labeling this summer as uniquely oppressive. Social media users have humorously apologized to polar bears for their heavy A/C usage, while others called for early school summer holidays.

Lam, however, remains unfazed. He attributed the current global extreme temperatures to a strengthening El Niño phenomenon in the eastern Pacific, predicting with high confidence that this year will become the hottest on record.

The Power of USB Fans
Despite intense public curiosity, Lam confirmed he has not broken his streak. His cooling strategy relies on strategically positioned six-inch USB fans. He noted that with proper room ventilation, directing a fan toward the head and shoulders is sufficient to stay cool. Lam utilizes three such fans—at his desk and on both sides of his marital bed—emphasizing that running them for 20 hours costs mere cents.

Traditional Cooling Practices
Lam also recommended several practical, low-tech alternatives:

Wiping the face and neck with wet towels and taking multiple room-temperature showers daily.

Drinking at least two liters of water a day to prevent dehydration.

Sleeping on a thin, breathable mattress designed for maximum airflow.

Lam clarified that he does not entirely oppose air conditioning. However, he advises those who use it to opt for Grade 1 energy-efficient models and maintain a temperature of 27°C to curb carbon emissions and power costs.
