Hong Kong International Airport’s new Terminal 2 (T2) officially began operations yesterday, marking an important milestone in the airport’s multi-billion-dollar expansion project.

Hong Kong Airlines is the first airline to move into the new terminal. Starting today, all of the airline’s passenger flights will operate from T2. The Airport Authority expects approximately 4,200 passengers to use the new terminal on its first day of service.

Terminal 2, which has been under construction for several years, is designed to significantly boost the airport’s overall passenger handling capacity. The new facility features spacious and modern departure halls, enhanced check-in counters, more comprehensive retail and dining options, improved immigration and security facilities, as well as better connectivity with Terminal 1 via the existing people mover system.

The opening of T2 is part of the Airport Authority’s long-term strategy to transform Hong Kong International Airport into a “Three-Runway System” airport and strengthen its position as a leading international aviation hub in Asia. The new terminal will gradually accommodate more airlines in the coming months, with a phased transition planned over the next few years.

Airport Authority Chairman Paul Lam said the opening of Terminal 2 represents another step forward in enhancing Hong Kong’s aviation infrastructure and improving the overall travel experience for passengers. He encouraged travellers to allow extra time when visiting the airport during the initial transition period.

Passengers are advised to check their flight information carefully and confirm the correct terminal with their airline before heading to the airport.

The full activation of Terminal 2 is expected to play a key role in supporting the recovery and long-term growth of Hong Kong’s aviation sector, which has been steadily rebounding after the challenges of recent years.
