The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) reported three new chikungunya fever cases on August 6, 2025, bringing this year’s total to four, all imported. The CHP urged the public to maintain hygiene and adopt anti-mosquito measures to prevent the disease.

First Case: 79-Year-Old Woman

A 79-year-old woman from Lei Tung Estate, Southern District, who traveled to Foshan, Guangdong, from July 1 to 31, developed fever and joint pain on August 4. She sought treatment at Queen Mary Hospital on August 5 and is stable. Her blood tested positive for chikungunya. As she was in Foshan during the incubation period, this is an imported case. The CHP notified Guangdong authorities.

Second and Third Cases: Father and Son

A 55-year-old man with chronic conditions and his 10-year-old son from Tivoli Garden, Tsing Yi, traveled to Bangladesh from July 12 to August 3. The father developed symptoms on July 27, sought treatment on August 4 at Princess Margaret Hospital, and is stable. The son, reporting mosquito bites, developed symptoms on August 1, was treated at Hong Kong Adventist Hospital–Tsuen Wan, and transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital on August 6. Both tested positive for chikungunya and are stable. These are imported cases, and two asymptomatic household contacts are under medical surveillance. Bangladesh authorities were notified.

Public Health Response

The CHP is intensifying surveillance and mosquito control with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, including fogging, clearing stagnant water, and public education. Dr. AU Ka Wing advised using insect repellent for 14 days after returning from affected areas, monitoring for symptoms, and avoiding self-medication with aspirin or ibuprofen due to risks like bleeding or Reye’s syndrome in children.

Chikungunya symptoms are milder than dengue, with rare severe cases. The CHP and Hospital Authority have enhanced testing capacity to ensure early detection. The public is urged to prevent mosquito breeding by keeping drains clear and removing water containers.
