A spokesperson for the Hospital Authority (HA) announced that Kai Tak Hospital will commence services in phases starting October 5, with medical services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital being progressively transferred to Kai Tak Hospital. As the largest public hospital in Hong Kong and the flagship hospital of the Kowloon Central Cluster (KCC), Kai Tak Hospital assumes the role of a public healthcare hub in Kowloon. It will leverage its strengths, enhance the division of labor and collaboration among hospitals within the cluster, and support other hospital clusters in Kowloon to further elevate the quality of public healthcare in the region.
With a total gross floor area of approximately 500,000 square meters, Kai Tak Hospital will provide 2,400 beds across five blocks: the Acute Block (Block 1), Administrative Block (Block 2), Teaching and Training Block (Block 3), Specialist Outpatient Block (Block 4), and Oncology Block (Block 5). Its service coverage extends to a population of 1.8 million across districts including Yau Tsim Mong, Kowloon City, Wong Tai Sin, and Kwun Tong.
Kai Tak Hospital will roll out its services in two planned phases, with the first phase featuring the Specialist Outpatient Block and Oncology Block. Among them, the Family Medicine Integrated Clinic located on the 1st floor of the Specialist Outpatient Block will commence operations on October 5, providing an estimated daily quota of around 250 family medicine consultations during the initial stage. Patients with episodic illnesses can make appointments starting from the morning of October 4 via the "Book GOPC" function on the HA mobile app "HA Go" or through the telephone booking system.
The first phase of services will be introduced progressively. Specialist outpatient services for Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Clinical Oncology at Queen Elizabeth Hospital will be transferred in batches to the Specialist Outpatient Block starting in late October. In addition, supporting services—including Allied Health, Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology examination services, the Department of Pathology, the Pharmacy, Clinical Oncology and Obstetrics & Gynaecology day services, and the Patient Resource Centre—will also be introduced step by step starting in October.
Dr. Albert Cheung Fuk-chi, Cluster Chief Executive of the Kowloon Central Cluster and Hospital Chief Executive of Kai Tak Hospital, stated: "The Specialist Outpatient Block at Kai Tak Hospital houses Hong Kong's largest pharmacy, which is the first pharmacy in a public hospital equipped with an integrated automated dispensing system, capable of handling up to 3,200 prescriptions daily. The Oncology Block features the public hospital system's first cyclotron and Gamma Knife equipment, utilizing advanced technology to enhance the patient care experience. Furthermore, the Clinical Oncology Centre and Neuroscience Centre, together with the adjacent Hong Kong Children's Hospital, will offer comprehensive, high-quality tertiary specialist referral services for the Kowloon region."
Kai Tak Hospital has formulated the plan for the second phase of service transfer. Drawing on the experience gained from the first phase, the hospital will advance subsequent service arrangements step by step based on overall construction progress. Major clinical services—including inpatient, surgical, and Accident & Emergency (A&E) services—are expected to commence in 2028. Clinical services for remaining specialties, such as Orthopaedics & Traumatology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Paediatrics, will also be transferred to Kai Tak Hospital in tandem with the launch of Phase 2 inpatient services.
Dr. Cheung added: "Kai Tak Hospital is a crucial component of Kowloon's overall healthcare blueprint. The new hospital will collaborate with other hospitals in the region while providing emergency and pathology support to the adjacent Hong Kong Children's Hospital. Additionally, Kai Tak Hospital's A&E Department is three times larger than that of Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Once operational, it will work closely with the redeveloped Kwong Wah Hospital to further optimize the overall layout of acute hospitals in Kowloon, ensuring a more balanced distribution of public healthcare resources and greater service efficiency."
To help patients familiarize themselves with the new hospital environment, Service Ambassadors will be deployed at the lobbies and clinical department floors of Blocks 4 and 5 during the initial opening period to answer inquiries regarding appointments, transport, and facility locations, as well as to offer immediate assistance.
